27th March 2010

Nesting starts in box 3?

We turned on the cameras eairlier than normal today, in the hope of seeing some nesting activity in either box 1 or 3.

Today most of the activity was in box 3. Around 08:00am we were shocked as the female brought in her first piece of nesting material. She the folllowed this with four nesting wiggles. We all thought that this was the start and that we would now have two nests this season, but . . . .

No sooner had the female brought in the material, she then decided to remove it again!

"I need to remove this from my box"   Out it goes!

The male has been visiting box 3 often and is always caught by the female. The male enters the box, closley followed by the female:

The male enters the box   "Hello dear, hows the nest building going?"

With the female in the box, the male tries to make his escape, however the female decided to fly up to the entrance hole and block his way. What happened next made us laugh as the male tried all different ways to leave the box, from the left wall, the right wall and finally forcing his way past the female!

During the afternoon the female brought in some more nesting material, only again to remove it as she left.

More comes in and then back out again!   More nest wiggles

For the last couple of weeks we have been trying to work out if the female in box 1 is the same female in box 3. Today did make us wonder if we were correct. The last moss visit was taken out of box 3. Two minutes later the female in box 1 entered with some moss, that looked exactly the same bits that were taken out of box 3. We are confused!

Hopefully when nesting fully starts we will finally be able to resolve the big mystry!

More in our next diary update, on 28th March.
