Firstly sorry for the lack of updates over the last view weeks, I have been busy with other projects and have not had the time to update this website as much as I would have liked. Let's catch up with the very latest now.
After all the visits on 21st February activity at all our boxes has now dropped. We left the cameras running outside and inside during Saturday and Sunday. Not one visit was recoreded to any of the boxes, however there were Blue Tit's and Great Tit's around.
On Saturday I saw two pairs of Great Tit's in the local cherry tree near our boxes 1 & 2. Box 1 has the enterance hole of 25mm but box 2 has a hole size of 30mm. I hoped that possibly one of them might just venture over to inspect the box. Sadly the pair left the tree without making any flight near to our boxes but they did return to the tree after only five minutes and the male was calling to the female. Our neighbour was doing some work in his garden at the time and could that have put them off. I think if it was quiet they may have come to inspect.
Is there the smallest chance of one of them coming and inspecting our boxes, as the weather warms up?
I know it is early in the season but I am now beginning to wonder if this year we will have three empty boxes. I have not given up hope yet as the weather has not been very warm and winter has only just given way.
On Sunday I took part in some training on Frogs and Toads. The leader doing the training informed us that the frogs were spawning at least two weeks later this year, due to the winter weather. This got me thinking are Blue Tits and Great Tits this year also two week behind?
I will continue to monitor all our boxes and can only hope that we may get a nest of somekind.
More in our next diary update.
