27th January 2008

The female comes back for another look

Yesterday we reported that we thought the male had two females. We, again, left the cameras running all day to see if we could capture and work out what was happening.

In the morning three visits by a male and female were recorded. In all three visits the female entered the box without any problems, whilst the male quickly departed. In two of the visits the female spent some time checking around the box, before leaving the box.

During the afternoon a female (the same one from the morning ?) came back and inspected the box on her own. She spent some time checking the roof and enterance hole (Pictures 2 & 3). Whilst she was inside the male was heard singing in a Cherry tree nearby.

During the afternoon visits dropped down but the male decided to continue his housework, by removing some of the droppings from the box floor. Who says the male/men do not do the housework!

Also whilst visiting some of the many other websites, we link to, two are reporting of a female performing nest wiggles. One is even reporting a female bringing moss into the box. We have not seen any of this in our boxes yet . . . .

The weather is now set to turn colder so will this slow down the visits?

Will the female now show us some signs that our box is going to used to raise a brood, by her, this year?

More in our next diary update.
