March 2007 Diary

10th March

Now we may have confused readers of our diary pages with the title "Not a Blue Tit". The reason is this first update today is about our Starling box. Since around 6:20am today a Starling has been visiting our new box. It has ventured inside three times and on the fourth visit brought some twigs with it. It looks like we may well have the beginning of a nest. Sadly there is no camera in this box, as the box could not have one fitted. Now all we need is also a Blue Tit to start and we will have a full set!

We have all the cameras on today in the hope we record some action in either box 1 or 2.

We will be back during the day, and later tonight with any news on all our boxes. Please keep checking!

**** UPDATE ****

We caught lots of action inside box 1 today. All the activity was around 1pm and involved swap overs and wiggles!

The lights were left off today and the female was the first to enter and stayed in the box for around 3 minutes, before leaving. Around 20 minutes later the female entered the box again but this time the male decided he wanted to come in also. The female was not going to allow this to happen without a warning or two. Sadly it did not work and the male entered the box, and then the female left. The male then stayed in the box for around 10 minutes, before leaving.

Five minutes later the male entered the box and then the female entered around 1 minute later, with the male departing very quickly. Once the female was happy the male had left, she performed over six nest wiggles!

Activity died down from 14:30 with no more visits being recorded. Box 2 saw no action being recorded. Our rooster returned at 18:02 and used box 2.

So with all this happening, we can now possibly say we have a very high chance of a nest in box 1. Currently there has been no nesting material brought in, but the weather for Sunday is even warmer temperatures. With this we hope and think some nesting material may appear, so we are going to record all the cameras again. Keep tuned!

We have now added a video of the events, inside box 1. Please visit the videos page and view the clip called "Spring Time"

Today also saw us putting all the numbers on the bird boxes in our local park. Whilst doing the task we saw a male & female Blue Tit enter one of the new boxes. Another nest?
