October 2006 Diary 1st October Visitors who read our "The Build" page will know that we were building the new Starling box. The wood was cut on 24th September, and put together. Over the next few days we painted the box. On 1st October, whilst the weather was a mix of sunshine and showers, the box was put up. All we need now is a resident, and that will be in the new year. Whilst we were putting up the new box, we "topped" up the feeders with seed, peanuts & fat balls. Now we called this diary entry "The new Starling box or is it?". You may be wondering why. Well what happended an hour later was . . . . Our resident Blue Tit noticed that something had changed. Within 1 hour of the new Starling box being put up it was investigating the outside and inside of the box. The hole is 45MM in size, so it can fit in easily. It did not stay long and then went back to box 1. We were concered that it may roost in the box, but luckly it returned to roost in box 1. So this is the reason why we called the entry this. So we now have two new Blue Tit boxes and one Starling box. As for our two old bird boxes we have now decided to put them up in our local nature reserve. We hope that they may be used. If so we hope we will be able to bring you some news, from time to time, about them.
