How many pairs?

Spring like weather at last! Today saw finally the winds move to a NW direction and temperatures reached a high of around 11C.

With all the warmer weather activity to box 1 was high. All the visits made to this box were by the female and each visit involved lots of nesting wiggles. Some more tiny bits of moss and grass was brought in. During the afternoon visits slowed down, before a bird (possibly the female) returned to roost for the night.

Box 3 saw lots of visits too. Two of the visits involved the male and female Blue Tit swapping over. Today the female has spent time cleaning the bits of moss still stuck on the box floor.

We are still trying to work out if we have one pair or two pairs of Blue Tit's this year. At the moment we now think there are two different pairs using boxes 1 & 3. Recently we have seen the female in box 1 performing lots of nesting wiggles each time she visits, whilst the female that visits box 3 has been more interested in cleaning the floor. To try and confirm this we recorded from both boxes so we can go through the recordings and see if any visits were made to boxes 1 & 3 at the same time. With 8 hours of video to go through we will let you know, once we have managed to go through all of it.

In a few weeks time we should begin to see nest building starting. Will we have one or two nests?

More in our next diary update, on 18th March.
