Diary written on 4th June 2008 This season has certainly been different. We switched on the camera at 06:30 and was shocked to see that three of the chicks had already fledged from the box. The last (smallest) chick was the only left. The male was still visiting with food, but worringly he was feeding bread, not what a little chick needs. Whilst at work the box was checked and the chick was ok, during the morning. Sadly during the afternoon the chick died. With all the dead chicks we thought we would not add any pictures to the last few diary entries. The nest is not a pretty sight. Nature can be so crawl at times. If the female had not been killed by the Sparrowhawk then possibly all the chicks may have fledged. The male certainly did well to get four chicks through. We heared another group of Blue Tit chicks in the trees and hope that possibly the other parents may help feed our four chicks. We are now going to fade away as the nest box is now empty. After all the events this season will we be back you might ask. The answer is most definitely YES! We will be back in August/early September when we begin looking out for winter roosters. We might also get the House Sparrows take over the unused bird box (Blue Tit Box 2). If they do we will be back with a mini website. So this brings the 2008 season to a sad close. Hopefully another female will use our box in 2009. Bye for now Ben |
