Last year (2009) we had a pair of Blue Tits use one of our Blue Tit boxes. The pair successfully managed to bring eight chicks through.
The hope is that a pair choose to use one of our boxes again this year.
Since the beginning of January we have seen a pair visiting box 1 often. As of Monday 18th January we have seen box 1 also used for roosting and on 6th February six nesting wiggles were made in box 1.
Nesting materail was being brought into box 1, but the nest sadly appears to have been abandoned. Box 3 saw a pair of Great Tit's try to take over the box, but a pair of Blue Tits claimed the box and now a nest has been built and completed, as of 15th April. Six eggs have been laid and full time incubation started on 22nd April. The first two chicks hatched in the evening on Wednesday 5th May. The final four hatched on 6th May. All six chicks fledged successfully on 26th May.
This website allows you to read the continuing unfolding story. The diary pages document all the highs & lows through out the season.
We now have six cameras located inside and outside the boxes, monitoring the birds and our boxes.
